When I was in high school, people told me that I would never make it to college. They said that I would remain in the same town that I was born and raised in. Here I am, 5 years later and 2 weeks away from graduating with my Bachelor of Arts in Women’s and Gender Studies and Psychology from Eastern Washington University which is roughly 13 hours away from my hometown. I overloaded every single quarter this year and took 24 credits this quarter so that I could graduate on time. I worked part-time, interned, was Co-President of Planned Parenthood Generation Action. I applied for graduate school. I got into graduate school. I got into the Master’s Program for Women and Gender Studies at George Mason University. Thank you to everyone who has ever helped me get to this point in my life, but especially to those who doubted me. Don’t get me wrong, at the end of the day, this was all for me. I did all of this because I wanted to. But it feels nice knowing that I’ve proved you all wrong and will continue to do so. In the wise words of Kevin Gnapoor, “Don’t let the haters stop you from doing your thang.”

 Sincerely,
Alexis Renae Griggs
